Myers Carpet is the oldest carpet outlet in Dalton, which bills itself as “the carpet capital of the world.” Over the past six years, this family business that started in 1957 in a smokehouse has found a new market for its flooring — the film industry –– which has brought them more than $1 million in sales.
“The film and television industry has been an incredible supplement to our business,” says Rick Myers, co-owner along with his brother Ray. “It’s been a lucky bonus to our existing business and reputation.”
It started about five years ago when a set director for the Vince Vaughn film, “The Internship,” came into their Atlanta store and asked them to make a custom Google rug for the film. A short time later, another set director needed 1970s era carpet for “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.” Myers Carpet went to work and provided hard-to-find orange and lime-green shag carpets.
Soon their reputation for custom rugs and high quality service began to grow. More set directors brought in flooring needs for “Dumb and Dumber To,” “Furious 7,” “Fast & Furious 8,” “Goosebumps,” “Identity Thief,” “The Nice Guys,” “The Accountant,” “Miracles from Heaven,” “Office Christmas Party” and several television shows including “Devious Maids,” “The Detour,” and “24: Legacy.” They’ve also worked on projects for Tyler Perry and his studios. Rick’s sons, Sinclair and Justman Myers, work at the company’s Nashville location, which provides flooring for the hit TV show “Nashville.”
They’re currently working on “Pitch Perfect 3” and Marvel’s “Black Panther.” A rural Georgia kid who collected an impressive list of comic books, like the first in the series for The Amazing Spider-Man and the X-Men, Rick calls his company’s role in filmmaking “a dream come true.”
“I’ve gotten to see things and work on projects I could never have imagined sitting in a warehouse in Dalton,” he says.
With 85 employees and locations in Dalton, Atlanta and Nashville, Myers Carpet is the largest natural fiber carpet store in the Southeast and one of the Top 10 in the country.
