With stages in short supply, Studio Space Atlanta expands

After record-setting months in 2020 — four in a row, in fact — it’s clear that the decision to expand Studio Space Atlanta came just in time.

Joining the Studio Space Atlanta network is a 25,000-foot space in Smyrna that will include three new stages, the largest at 8,000 square feet.

“We were turning down too much work not to expand — even before the pandemic hit,” says Daniel Minchew, who opened Studio Space Atlanta in 2008 and Atlanta Filmworks Studio in 2013. “Our clients couldn’t be happier about the additional space.”

After a year searching for the right space, Studio Space Atlanta closed on warehouse space just inside I-285. Upon completion, it will increase the company’s available space to nearly 130,000 square feet of stage and production space.

The goal is to have the warehouse built out by the end of the year, with the 8,000-square-foot stage expected to be operational by the end of March. That stage will include a 130-foot three-wall white cyc wall that creates an infinite white space on one side, and a black box on the other side.

There will be rolling construction on the three new stages, as the new location hosts productions while building.

“We rented out space three days in the first week we were here,” says Daniel, adding that there is a big demand for the warehouse space as it is. “That will slow down construction, but it allows us to fund the build-out at the same time we’re doing it.”

Studio Space Atlanta has expanded three times in 12 years — 2015, 2018 and 2020 — and Atlanta Filmworks Studio has been fully booked since opening in 2013. The facilities have been used for AMC "Halt & Catch Fire," "Lodge 49," and as second-unit stages for “Titan Games,” “Queen America,” “SuperFly,” and thousands of small productions including reality shows and commercial productions.
